Discover How to Stay Motivated and Accomplish Anything

Stay Motivated Accomplish Anything

Regardless of the goal, we all know that the key to accomplishing anything is to stay motivated. Often times, the tasks required to reach a final destination are tedious or difficult, and not ones that we enjoy. For example, many business leaders know, and live by, the mantra, “”Entrepreneurs live a few years of their lives like most people won’t, so they can live the rest of their lives like most people can’t’.” So, if you want to build a successful startup, you may have to work longer and harder than someone who is just an employee.

That said, the need to stay motivated does not apply just to business. Dave Ramsey (a businessman, author, radio host, television personality, and motivational speaker) helps people with personal finance and getting out of debt. He teaches that anyone, regardless of one’s income level, can accumulate personal wealth. The key is becoming debt free, living frugally, and saving for the future. Regardless, it does take commitment and persistence. You will need to start cutting coupons for groceries, buying clothes at a consignment shop, getting rid of cable television, stop eating out, and keeping a very strict budget that many people will find challenging. So, in order to follow Ramsey’s plan, you will need to find ways to stay motivated and committed to the goal.

Motivation does not come in a bottle or a pill. However, it is something that every person can tap into. Motivational speakers, like Tony Robbins and many others, have made millions selling people tips on staying motivated. Yet, if you dig into the stories of high achieving people, like billionaire Mark Cuban, we can develop a list of ten things that are essential to staying motivated, whether your goal is to start a business, learn a new language, or lose 50 pounds.

10 Ways To Stay Motivated

1. Take it One Day at a Time

While achieving a goal requires having a long-term plan and vision, most of your energy must be focused on today. One of the big reasons that people cannot stay motivated, and fail to achieve their really big goals, is not developing the daily habits needed to reach their objective. Success does not happen by accident or luck. You need a short list of 4 or 5 things that must be accomplished every day, and create a system for reviewing your progress. Success will not magically manifest. It requires a daily commitment.

2. Surround Yourself with Positivity

The people within your social circle have a big impact on your life. They will influence and impact almost everything going on in your world. So, you want to spend your time with those people who believe you can succeed, support you, and fill you with energy. Many motivational speakers talk about the concept of like attracts like. So, attracting positive people into your life may require some personal introspection. If you have a positive attitude, you will attract positive people into your sphere. On the other hand, if you focus only on the negative, you will attract those who reinforce those thoughts. All that said, surrounding yourself with positivity may require that you have the strength to cut certain friends and family out of your life.

3. Create a Vision Board

A vision board is a tool to help keep you focused, and it will consistently remind you what you are working toward. Essentially, the point is to have a visual representation of your goal to give you clarity. It is used as a daily affirmation that will keep you centered on your intentions. Regardless, this can be a fun and creative project. Start with a corkboard, cardboard, or any other sort of board. Then grab some magazines or go to the computer to find photos of who you want to be in the future. You can also find or write-down sentences or phrases that affirm your intentions. Affix all the images on your vision board, and hang it somewhere that will cause you to see it every day.

4. Make S.M.A.R.T. Goals

All success is based on setting and accomplishing goals. Without defining your objectives, life would simply be out of control. Every accomplishment requires having a vision and creating a map for achieving your desired result. The SMART method of setting goals is a well-established technique that brings structure and accountability to your intentions. Rather than having a vague aim. SMART’s goal framework constructs a clear pathway towards an objective, and will include obvious benchmarks and milestones with an assessment of the goal’s achievability. So, what does SMART stand for?

S – Specific:

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Realistic

T – Trackable

5. Reward Yourself

Rewards are a classic and powerful method for helping to stay motivated and achieving goals. For example, many people who are trying to become fit and lose weight will reward themselves with a weekly “cheat meal”. Essentially, it is a way of linking progress with happiness. The foundation of this strategy is being specific and building your reward into your plan. So, you will not receive the reward if (and only if) you keep your workout schedule and follow your healthy meal plan. Otherwise, you just won’t get it.

I suggest using three types: small weekly rewards, medium-sized monthly rewards, and large annual rewards. A small weekly reward is something along the lines of a candy bar or your favorite dinner. A medium-sized monthly reward is more substantial, like going out to a restaurant or buying a new pair of jeans. Finally, large annual rewards are significant and can include things like a vacation trip or buying yourself a motorcycle.

6. Believe in Yourself

Ultimately, you have the power to control your life. The strength needed to reach your dreams comes from within. Therefore, you must have faith in yourself. All the goal setting and mapping are meaningless if you don’t trust and believe in yourself. Every person has the ability to achieve incredible things in their life. That said, we do have obstacles that stand in our way which will need to be overcome. Nothing will ever seem to work right or go your way if your inner voice is not telling you that you can do it.

If you don’t believe that you can make your ideas work, they won’t. We all have to deal with uncertainty. But, as Cavin Coolidge once stated, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

7. Acknowledge Your Positive Attributes

There are many people who focus only on their weaknesses or negative attributes. Knowing that these things are a part of you helps increase your level of self-awareness. Yet, knowing what makes you special, what sets you apart, and what you do best is even more beneficial. This can save you time and energy from relearning a skill you already know. Also, identifying what you are really good out can assist you to branch out in different directions. Finally, acknowledging your positive attributes will improve your self-confidence and make you a happy person, which you will need to achieve your success.

8. Recognize Your Progress

Tracking your progress is a critical aspect of keeping focused and to stay motivated. For many people, it is not a lack of ability which causes them to fail, it is that they lost track of what they were trying to achieve. Moreover, if you don’t recognize your progress, you are more likely to focus your attention on your shortcomings or missed benchmarks. It doesn’t matter that this week you fell short. What is important is how far you have come. Also, tracking progress will empower you to see patterns in your results. As a consequence, you can better adjust your goal setting to create more realistic milestones, which, in the long run, will help give you a better chance at achieving ultimate success.

9. Visualize Accomplishing Your Goals

Simply put, visualization is the practice of creating a mental image for your desired goal. Essentially, what does success look like to you? If you are able to see the final outcome, you can also see yourself performing the acts required to achieve it. If you have read anything about the Law of Attraction, this is really what is meant by attracting into your life what you place your attention on. However, this is not a bunch of New Age mumbo-jumbo. Visualization is a well-established technique used by successful people within every field and backed by a significant amount of scientific evidence. It works because the brain reacts to imaginary action in a similar way to real-life action. As a result, you can develop learned behaviors without completing the physical activity.

10. Be Kind to Yourself

Every successful person will tell you that failure is part of the journey. The best salesperson in the world will hear ‘no’ more than they will hear ‘yes’. Every self-made millionaire will have a list of business ventures that did not pan out, and may have even filed for bankruptcy at least once in their life. Do not beat yourself up just because things are not working out the way you planned. We often only see the successful outcome of others, but not the pitfalls and struggles that a person goes through to get there. It is important to acknowledge and embrace mistakes, shortcomings, and failures. But, once you have, it is time to let them go and move forward.

Stay Motivated Bonus: Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Finally, don’t compare yourself to others. At the end of everything, you are in competition with no one but yourself. From time to time, we all find ourselves comparing our progress and success to other people. Nevertheless, this can become emotionally damaging and stifle your motivation. While competition with others can become a good source of motivation, left uncontrolled, it can also cause self-doubt and disappointment. Further, what we typically see from others is an edited version of their reality, and not what is really going on behind the scenes. As a result, these comparisons will do nothing and will not help you achieve your goals. The better option is focusing all your attention and energy on achieving your own success.

I think for me, the point that sets all the others in motion is number 6. Once I have that locked down, I become like a charging rhino. However, looking at your post, it was probably a good idea not to put it first, so that the post doesn’t sound like every other post. A lot of people really underestimate the power that our environment has over us. Surrounding ourselves with people who are where we want to be is really key. Moreover, it makes it much easier to subconsciously become like them. The thing I would like to point… Read more »

It is absolutely true that birds of a feather flock together. It is a lesson I am trying to teach one of my sons. He has trouble understanding why he can’t get things going for himself, and just doesn’t want to accept that his friends are playing a big role.

I am a content creator and i admit that it really is hard to stay motivated and focus on what you are doing. You have to really set your mind and clear your mind from all the distractions. For me, my biggest problem is having the mood to start anything. Yes i do have the idea of the content that I’m going to do, i have the tools that i need and the work space that I’m going to be working on. But when my mood is not there, there’s nothing i can do. Sometimes my mood naturally comes but… Read more »

I’ve been encountering SMART when it comes to motivation. In every forum, blog, and an article. It’s always present. It’s the sum up of all the things you need to focus on to get motivated. Why set for goals when you know for yourself you can’t achieve it in a matter of time? And also, if you’re not dedicated to it. Everything will go to waste. So must have to apply SMART in every way.

In addition, everything stated here is solely true and very helpful.

It is not surprising. The S.M.A.R.T. method for goal creation has been around since the early 1980s. It is a tried and true project management system.

Exactly. Adapt the things which are positive on your surroundings and set a goal for our tasks. If you have plans for your better future make sure to create at least a step by step process for you to accomplish your goal. Ignore the negative facts just focus on those things that will makes you develop. At this point, you are only the one who can decide whether its good or not, but put some dedication and passion on what you’re doing, trust me, that BIG dream will come true.

Thank you for this wonderful article! I agree with what you wrote especially visualization. You have to visualize the event or result that you desire and then you have to fix that mindset. Let’s not also forget to use affirmations and sometimes we have to slow down if needed! Personally, I kind of visualize the personality traits that might help me get where I want to be or help me achieve that goal.

Great article! There are many times in life when negativity surround us destroying our hopes and dreams. We can’t always control what happens to us but we certainly can control how we respond to it. It is very important to create a positive environment for ourselves and we’ll begin to become more motivated to achieve your dreams and goals.

Staying motivated is always something that I struggle with in my daily activities. I don’t have a problem visualizing the end result as I am a day dreamer. :-D. The main problem that I have is setting up goals and accomplishing them. I have a hard time focusing on a task from end to finish. This article has been helpful in identifying the steps that I need to take to stay motivated. I think sometimes all it takes is baby steps and like you said it’s always good to take things 1 day at a time.

Thank you for this informative post. As a student, I’m actually having a hard time being motivated because of comparing myself to others and I also don’t feel being rewarded when I reward myself since I’m always thinking of project deadlines that I need to pursue. I guess another problem with me is that I’m always unfocused. By the way, there is also a Japanese technique that would help someone to be motivated and overcome laziness but I guess this only works for lifetime goals. The techniques is called Kaizen. In this technique, an individual should do a task such as reading a book or exercising for one minute everyday. The main objective of the method is to make little progress to a long term goal. It would not be hard or bothersome to someone’s part if he/she do a task for one minute and as a person continuously develop in his/her task, they might find themselves… Read more »

Great article you have here. I agree with everything you said. I am at that point of my life when I really need to stay motivated to achieve my goals. In my case, I would have to stay inspired in order to accomplish anything. In my opinion, being motivated and inspired are somewhat related. For me, I am having a hard time staying motivated when I am doubting my self. What really caught my attention is the bonus part that states ‘Don’t Compare Yourself to Others’. Everyone has different problems they have to deal with every single day. You can’t really say that one is having a better life than you just because of their monetary status. Everyone has different goals and accomplishments. One may have already been in the middle of the race while you are just about to start and comparing what you are now to those who already started the race will be unfair to you. That will just discourage you because of the intimidation of their… Read more »

Everything indicated in this post is true. I highly appreciate the information. There are some people who are naturally optimistic. But there are others who acquire optimism through experience and constant mental conditioning. It’s true that patience is a virtue. Good things don’t always happen in an instant. This article is a big help for those people who find themselves demoralized. But for me, to get yourself motivated, do something that would make you happy. Do things that don’t just matter because of the people around you that may say something you don’t like to hear. Do it because you want it, and not because some people want you to do it. What matters is that you have the passion doing it and as long as that passion of yours is fueled by hard work, it will continue to burn and light up others to inspire them.

I learned a lot from reading this post. Success has always been about knowing where you’ll arrive at and doing what’s necessary to get there. Dreams are easy to make. You can have all the dreams you want, but without making the required effort, none of these will ever come to true. Successful planning is just the beginning. Actualizing your goals is what’s hard. I would have to admit that this article was specially written for me. I have been down with some kind of depression that I can’t really explain and working with a pal, who is super positive, has really pulled me up a bit. Reading these steps on how I can keep up being motivated can help me rise up better and grow to be one of the best around. I’m grateful for this and hope to learn more by joining this amazing site.

Well, i have not much positive people to surround myself with when it comes to earning money online. It is because they have no idea at all how to do it and how it works. So they are most of the time saying that what i am doing (trying to earn money online) is just a waste of time. They say, “why not look for real jobs with real money and real people?!” and… “money online is just a scam” and the likes. I do not blame them because there are a lot of bad news with people that invested… Read more »

I would never forget @Barida, as he was the individual who taught the best way to utilising my data, time and resources online and make the best of it. I actually experienced what you passed through @fern2x2001 because lots of people don’t understand there are genuine means of earning online. Most of them were probably duped in ponzi and shady networking, and a result of that they are ruled anyone doing any online activities as a scammers and those who while away their time doing nothing useful or looking for who to steal from. But they are so wrong, it’s… Read more »

I really enjoyed reading this article! A lot of times, I find it easy to motivate myself. However, I struggle to gain the consistency in staying motivated, altogether. The first tip (taking things day by day) is something I’ve adopted prior to reading this post. Sometimes, when we look at our goals as whole, it can be a bit overwhelming. Either we feel we’re miles away from actually achieving what we want, or there are too many multiple task to complete. Nevertheless, taking things in bit sizes will always make the actual cookie much easier to swallow. Recognizing my progress… Read more »

@JonathanS I very much agree with you in taking task bit by bit, than trying to rush the whole work at one stretch. When something is being attended to in phases, it’s definitely going to make the work a little bit easier to be handled than trying to do it all in one trail. This would only compound issues for the person involved. On mentioning about visualization of the work in the mind is really a good strategy, it’s said that great battles are first won in the mind, so therefore it’s paramount to engage the mind first in any… Read more »

If I’m to rate this article, it’s definitely going to on the rating of 9.9/10, because it is well detailed and informative as well. The tips and points highlighted in it are very excellent and would definitely be effective and efficient in keeping one’s motivation tank always filled and ready to work as always. The first step to keeping ones motivation up listed in the article is very good because taking task one at a time will allow you the time to keep calm and sought out the best way to handle such program. Taking up several tasks at once… Read more »

You really hit the nail on the head with this comment, dedication, passion and I would also add persistence are the core keys to getting anything done and successful. If you lack any of these traits, there is no need venturing into any task in the first instance because you have already failed before even getting started.
