Master the Art of Digital Marketing with These 4 Tips

Digital marketing is a term that many people use interchangeably with internet marketing. Yet, it has its beginning way back in the 1980s, when automobile companies mailed out computer floppy disks holding multimedia content publicizing their cars. Nevertheless, in today’s world, when a person walks into a store, restaurant, or other business for the first time, there is a good chance they discovered it online.  It has become a simple fact of life that most people are using the Internet to find, evaluate, and choose businesses. So, how does a company make sure people are picking them?

If you are not investing in digital marketing, your company is likely as profitable as it will ever become. Technology and consumer trends are changing every day. In order the thrive and succeed, a company must continually adopt new ideas. Moreover, once you have embraced the concept of digital marketing, you are still left with a laundry list of strategies and tactics to consider. And, since we are talking about an investment of time and money, you want to make sure you are getting the best possible return. Don’t you agree?

All that said, there are essentially four areas which your company must master. These are a priority for any type of digital marketing success.

Essential Digital Marketing Components

1. A Customer-Centered Website

The centerpiece of any digital marketing campaign is your business website. Therefore, if potential customers have been finding the same 10 to 20 static web pages for the last 5 to 10 years,  it is time for a redesign. While your website has been sitting motionless, technology has moved forward, SEO practices have been updated, and consumer trends have changed. No matter what else you do, without a well-designed website, your digital marketing will fall short. Additionally, it is not enough to have a visually appealing look. A business website must be centered completely around the customer, meeting their needs and demands. So, here 6 critical website characteristics needed to guarantee a positive customer experience and boost your digital footprint.

  1. Logical Site Structure – Regardless of a visitor’s entry point, a potential customer should reach the information they are looking for within 2 or 3 clicks. This easily and logical pathway through your site also helps with SEO, since Google uses site structure as one of its ranking criteria.
  2. Contact Information – While having a “contact us” page is an essential best practice, visitors should not have to go hunting for your customer service number. Also, make sure your phone number provides a clickable link for cellphone users.
  3. Easy Navigation – The best site structure has little value unless visitors can instinctively navigate your way. Ensure that page names are logical and easy to understand. In most instances, if you try to be original, you are only going to frustrate users.
  4. Social Media Optimization – The typical online user spends most of their time on social media. So, it is critical to have integration with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other major social platforms. This will include making it easy for visitors to share your product pages and content, and that it will appear properly in social feeds.
  5. Responsive Design – According to data compiled by Google, on a daily basis, 80 percent of all online users will access the internet with a smartphone. If your business website cannot adapt to a visitor’s mobile device screen, they will go spend their money somewhere else.
  6. An Active Blog – A blog attracts visitors by answering their search questions and it will become a resource for existing customers. Further, Google provides preferential treatment to websites that are active, making this an important search engine optimization strategy.

2. Social Media Marketing

While many businesses have a Facebook page, and know they need to be on social media, they are also not sufficiently engaged. Social media marketing is no longer an option. It is critical to stay up to date with current trends. For example, online customer service has become an essential component of digital marketing. There is an expectation that companies will answer all questions, comments, and concerns when addressed on their social pages. Potential customers will use your reactions and behavior to evaluate you. If it appears that the conversation is one-sided, and all you are interested in is selling, this will turn many consumers off.

If you learn just one thing from today’s article, hopefully, it is that social media cannot be just for soliciting. Almost everything you really need to know about social media is in the name, being social. While the ultimate goal is to get your social followers to click a link, subscribe to your newsletter, join an event, request a rate quote, or make a purchase, your customers and followers expect and want to make a personal connection with your brand. Consumers are demanding an authentic, human engagement. There is no “set it and forget it” solution when it comes to social media marketing. So, hire yourself a social media manager or a marketing agency. You simply do not want to underestimate the power social media has on building authority, trust, and loyalty.

3. Build a Large, Shareable Content Library

Blogging and vlogging have numerous benefits. Yet, many business owners question the real value and return on investment. Moreover, most don’t really have the time nor the ability to create high-value content. What would they even blog about? Nevertheless, there are reasons why most marketers will tell you that “content is king”. A large, shareable content library can make a big difference, even when other areas are lacking.

First and foremost, most content will equate to more free and organic search engine traffic.  Typically, each content piece means a new webpage. So, it comes down to simple math. Each new webpage is a new opportunity for a potential customer to find you. The more blog entries you have, the more likely that your content is relevant to a user’s search query. In addition, sharable content augments and enhances your social media marketing efforts. Unlike a simple text or basic image post, shared blog content includes a link, driving traffic to your website and increasing leads.

4. Search Engine Marketing

While the name sounds similar to search engine optimization, search engine marketing utilizes paid advertisements to increase your online visibility. But, this strategy is more than bidding on keywords and sending visitors to your website’s homepage. Rather, effective search engine marketing will improve and increase your content’s reach. Accomplishing this requires the use of pay-per-click campaigns to showcase your content to a typically unreachable segment of your target audience. For a variety of reasons, it is easy to have your organic reach flatline. Paid campaigns can break through the logjam.

How and why this is more effective than simply sending visitors to your homepage comes down to search intent. Imagine a person goes to Google and asks the question, “How do I fix a leaking sink?” The intention behind that search is not to hire a plumber. The intent is to learn how to fix it themselves. The searcher may ultimately decide that doing it themselves is more trouble than it is worth, but the plumbing service that sent the user directly to their homepage is not getting the business. You build trust when you actually fulfill the potential customer’s need for information.

I totally agree with your article. Digital marketing has taken a big part of the society today. What I don’t agree is marketing by the use of youtube specially with sexy models. This by nature will really get a lot of likes and views. But not insuring that your hitting tour targer market. Maybe it will become viral due to the teenage boys sharing the video to their friend but the brand is not getting much engagement for the product. How can we avoid this kind of incidents?

Well, there is the old adage that “sex sells”. But, you are correct. You have to understand your target audience and their motivators. Those types of videos will not work for everyone.

This is a very credible piece of information, it’s an established fact that every business venture lives for its customers and patronizers because without them, such business wouldn’t exist. So therefore, making your digital marketing be customer based is going to be very fruitful for anyone that take up his or her business agenda in such manner. On the part of social media marketing, I personally find it very successful in terms amassing new customers, getting wide coverage of one’s products and services, improving sales and profits as well. As long as any individual taking up social media marketing either… Read more »

Unfortunately, many companies (especially small businesses) are still trying to apply traditional sales tactics to digital marketing. They don;t realize that people will just tune them out.

God how you are correct! To many new marketers believe the sole purpose of social media is to solicit their new product or services. They haven’t learned yet how to become a “Network Marketer” or one who uses Social Media to “network” (build relationships) with their social friends and followers. Also, I took special interest in your advice to utilizes paid advertisements to increase my online visibility. I just “Boosted” my first post so as to gain a bigger audience just like you said. And, It is working! Thanks for your dedication, hard work and research.

Thanks, Bubbie! You are right. It is all about relationship building. I didn’t specifically talk about native advertising but, yes, it has the same effect as search ads.

Yes, social media is something you don’t want to underestimate. It helps you reach your customers or future customers more easily, it will help you showcase your company’s product and let people see it the way you want it to be seen.

Surveys are great help as well if you want to know what visitors think on your site, understanding their wants and needs will surely help you to improve and be better.

Surveys… now, you are starting to get into specifics. Social media is perfect for getting all sorts of feedback, and surveys is a great way.

A customer centered website is actually extremely important. You need to treat your customers like royalty and this should mean that your customers when they visit your website don’t have to do too much work. Have a navigation bar that is easy to use, by having a website that is easy to be navigated, your customers won’t waste time going through your whole site to find a particular thing. The other important thing is a responsive design. People are increasingly using smartphones to browse the internet so it is definitely important.

That is one thing that many companies do not understand. Their website is not for them. It is for their customers.

Amazing article with a few home truths. There are a million blogs out there. However, it is not uncommon to find blogs that have old content, updated maybe after 1 or 2 months. As a reader and potential customer, you lose interest and may stop following the blog altogether.

Thumbs up for highlighting the importance of a website from a customer- centered point of view. Many websites are hard to navigate and it gets irritating trying to find your way around a website. If you’re impatient like me and have no time for that, you simply give up on that website.

This is a good guide. I can’t tell you how many times a poorly designed website has turned me off of a brand or service! A good social media presence is important to, especially if it’s used to interact with customers directly. I’ve worked in SEO myself, and can’t even begin to tell you how important organic content and searchable keywords are to getting yourself noticed. All of these are absolutely necessary for successful marketing!

Most people who visit your website are likely checking out your product and services; make sure you have specific pages that outline exactly what you offer with short, informative pieces of copy.

Social media marketing is one aspect of internet marketing many of the conventional companies have neglected in recent times. The disheartening part is that they always assume that users of these social media networks are not ready to patronize them at any given point in time which to me is an error. It’s also good to learn more by also understanding the need to setup websites that can respond to customer’s needs at one click.

I agree with you because the reason why people visits a website is they want something about the main content that need to know or they can benefited to so if you will give a lot of other informations that are not related to your content, there is a possibility that they will get bored

Social media marketing is very in demand nowadays and most companies are looking on this because they can save money promoting their products and services. I’ve heard that Facebook is one them and one of my friend told me that FB platform will pay you if you’ll allow them to use your account for daily ads. In that way, the products and services can be easily expose to people. Companies much prefer this method instead of renting physical location that will cost them too much.

I would call it ignorance of these small business establishment or it’s owners to embracing the future trend in making the out of one’s business ventures. Technological improvements have made lot of things that seemed impossible more realistic today, it’s definitely the loss of anyone who fails to capitalize on these innovations and progress as well.

I think that the reason why these half nude sexy models are used for these YouTube video advert is because it’s an established fact that 80% of the people out there especially those that are actively online freaks are sex craved individual and as such any clip that engages sexy models tend to get lots of hits and traffic but it’s definitely not good for the real reason for embarking on the advert because those that are supposed to be interested in patronizing might be deterred from doing so.

It’s true that we have to consider all the details of creating the ideal website. The design of a website, for instance, depends on the type of business we intend to put up online. For example, if we plan to establish an online business pertaining to organic food, our viewers would most likely expect to see a green-colored background or a logo resembling a fruit or vegetable. By polishing the fine details of our website, we can also focus on becoming customer-oriented and not sales-oriented. When we welcome people into our sites, it’s important that we make them feel special… Read more »

I’ve seen so many companies and organizations try different marketing techniques only to end up losing potential users. Even their target audience. Most businesses nowadays devote too much attention to aggressive marketing tactics that just fail to work. One famous example is those annoying online ads that keep popping up out of the blue. True. The website takes the biggest slice of pie so to speak. If the website is fresh, attractive, and engaging, it will have more impact than using ads that clutter and spam the online network. The responsiveness issue is so common these days. Most sites are… Read more »

Feedback is everything to the existence and continuity of any business establishment because it’s the only the personnel in charge knows exactly how the customers feel and what they desire and see to the improvement of such products and services. It’s always advised to listen to the need of the customers because such business exist solely for them and without them the company is useless. This is practically the same thing in digital marketing, if you fail to understand the value of feedback messages and attending to them, in no distant time, there is a good tendency of losing your… Read more »

Having a writer’s blog and video blog are quite common these days. It may seem easy because we’re always given the impression that becoming a blogger means to express your thoughts and feelings on any particular matter that captures your attention and interest. Although it’s true that you have the freedom to voice out your opinion, it’s not always about you. The ideas you impart should be able to penetrate the hearts and minds of the readers who would openly express their feedback through the comment section which is usually located below the article. 🙂

In my opinion, the article said that using an easy to navigate website should be consider because I experience a lot of struggles in many websites just searching inside about something and I cannot come up with it easily. It’s annoying for me and resulting not to visit again to that website.

@Jim15 This is what our society entail today for mostly young youths, they are more inclined to accessing sexual explicit content online and are very good in generating lots of traffic. It’s only when your service offered online is meant for them to be your target audience that you would also benefit from the traffic they generate for for your website.

@xobe The unending number of people on social media makes it an ever fertile resource ground to always generate new customers and patronizers. And if you carryout your activities online well, make lots of active friends online, there is no ending to the kind of traffic you would get online and there is every tendency that those people visiting your page either on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc would take interest in whatever products and services that you are offering and patronize you.

@Barida It’s actually true that most new private business establishment these days fails to understand and take advantage of the benefits that come with social media marketing. Personally, I’m of the view that any establishment that still fails to utilize Internet media marketing is still operating with the belief of stone age and such establishment would always be stuck in the past.

After reading the article, I definitely agree that the four ways listed above are great marketing tactics. The one that sticks out to me the most is marketing via social media. There’s a very small chance that in today’s world you’ll meet someone that does not interact with social media. I personally use this tactic to broaden my audience but this article gives me insight on doing more than just sticking with social media to catch the eye.

This is true. As what I have observed in social media, the group of people with thousands of followers or friends are those who are having “pretty face” (sexy models). They can easily attract audience or viewers. Although the focus is with them and not with the product they are endorsing, it’s still helpful by whatever means.

@Conrado, It does seem like there are a lot of companies out there that can’t get away from the “sex sells” style of marketing. I don’t think YouTube videos are necessarily a bad way to do marketing, but the focus should definitely be on the product, not a sexy model. A good way might be to make use of some other popular YouTube channels. Since unboxing videos are popular, maybe you can look into a YouTube channel that does unboxing videos, maybe even one specific to the type of products you’re marketing, and offer to send them a sample of… Read more »

“Sex sells” has been part of the story when it comes to social media marketing. Well, obviously the purpose is to attract and get the attention of these people who are very much hooked up in social media and mostly to the youngsters. Too bad, sometimes the purpose is loosing its substance and viewers are focusing more on what they see like on billboards. In my opinion, getting involved with some known survey sites will really keep you close to your target and potential customers. Of course, being open to customers’ feedback will lead you to improve your business whether… Read more »

@Jim15, I agree completely. I can think of so many times where I’ve come across a website with an outdated design, confusing menus, difficult navigation, broken links, etc., and it’s such a turnoff. Even if you have a good social media presence and make strong use of SEO, a website that isn’t at all user-friendly would hugely discourage me from engaging.

You are absolutely right. Businesses which are not on the internet have higher chances of getting left behind. Most of the successful ones have their own websites and can easily be accessed by users which are potential consumers. In addition, you can also interact with these people by their feedback and it will definitely give you brand new ideas to improve your business.

I really agree in this article, that to be able to gain a positive customer experience, the digital marketing should have a user friendly interface that will run smoothly when the customers use that particular foot prints. It should provide complete details regarding on contact information and an active blog for customers to fill in whenever they needed to do so. Although digital marketing is a bit complicated since it has a wide variety of structures that should look into. But I think that it can be address very well, another thing is that it must really have a great… Read more »
